Job Description

SCOPE OF POSITION
The Child Life Specialist structures an environment within the hospital setting for promoting growth and development of sick, injured, or handicapped neonatal, infant, pediatric and adolescent patients. The Child Life Specialist strives to reduce stress, increase adaptive coping, and protect and enhance developmental skills.
Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates psychosocial patient and family needs in order to provide excellent patient care.
Formulates individual plans for each child to further social, emotional, cognitive, and physical growth.
In order to address the medical, procedural, and surgical experiences of patients and families, the Child Life Specialist will assess emotional, educational, developmental, and diversionary needs and coordinate therapeutic interventions.
Supervises and organizes the playroom and teen room to provide developmentally appropriate therapeutic activities for patients.
Assesses and orders supplies and maintains equipment necessary for programming and safety in the play and teen rooms.
Uses all other program supplies in a cost effective manner.
Trains and supervises volunteers and students working in the Child Life Program.
Provides educational resources regarding to students, staff, and community regularly to promote awareness of Child Life services, the unique needs of hospitalized children and pediatric friendly practices.
Screens and organizes donations, community groups, and special event entertainment to monitor safety and suitability.
Fosters positive hospital-community relations.
Documents observations and Child Life interventions in the medical chart according to Child Life protocol.

EDUCATION EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's Degree in Child Life, Child Development, Family Studies, Psychology, or a closely related field required.
Knowledge base must include neonate, infant, pediatric and adolescent growth and development; family dynamics; therapeutic play for sick and/or handicapped children.
Completion of 600 hour Child Life internship required.
Certification Requirements:  Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) from the Child Life Council must be obtained within 12 months of hire and maintained thereafter.
